California Sexual Harassment Training in the Workplace
California's legal training requirements are satisfied by the Civil Rights Department's free online training programs on combating sexual harassment and abusive behavior in the workplace. While this is mandatory in most workplaces, similar videos are often shown in colleges and high schools.
According to California law, all businesses with five or more employees must train both their supervisory and nonsupervisory staff on how to prevent sexual harassment and other forms of abusive behavior. Employees that are not supervisors must attend one hour of training every two years, while those who are must attend at least two hours of training. As long as the necessary hourly total requirement is satisfied, the training can be finished all at once or a little bit daily. The law mandates that actual cases of harassment based on gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation be included in the training.
Employers are expected to keep track of all employee training records for a minimum of two years.
Every two years, employers are required to train staff members on how to avoid sexual harassment and other forms of harmful behavior. Employers are also required to present employees with the Department's sexual harassment poster, fact sheet, or equivalent material.
This does not mean employees or supervisors do not sexually harass colleagues because it does happen. However, this is a great requirement because education is one of the first steps of prevention.
