How Sexual Assault Impacts Mental Health
Victims of sexual assault experience suffering in addition to their physical discomfort. Emotional suffering can persist the longest. The traumatizing experience can linger in your memory like a ghost. It is crucial to acknowledge and treat the psychological impacts of sexual assault, regardless of whether you are a survivor yourself or know someone who has been a victim.
Some of the most common side effects are feelings of shame or guilt, PTSD, anxiety disorders, isolation, insomnia, eating disorders, substance abuse disorders, nightmares, depression, and suicidal thoughts. In teenage girls, 50% of them developed one mental health disorder and 55% had at least two mental health disorders.
It would be beneficial for victims of sexual assault to receive professional help but unfortunately, this is not the case. If you are looking for assistance, call a hotline or send us a message.
