Trauma-Informed Yoga

Trauma-Informed yoga is yoga directed toward specific needs of individuals. It involves:

  • More introspection and reflection on one's past

  • Controlling feelings and impulses

  • Connecting back to one's surroundings

  • Uses different poses or shifts poses slightly to be better adapted

  • Main goal is to avoid triggering individuals

A common practice in trauma-informed yoga is using the mat as a safe and private space. While many yoga teachers often place mats close together and guide students physically, trauma-informed yoga teachers maintain a comfortable distance to allow those participating to deal with their trauma safely. It has been said to reduce PTSD amongst women, especially those who have experienced sexual violence with their partner.
